Community Living North Grenville supports individuals with an intellectual
disability and their families throughout the communities of North Grenville.
We believe that:
- Community means supporting individuals with an intellectual disability to establish their lives in the community as we know it;
- We involve a process of planning with people but not for people;
- Individuals with an intellectual disability have every opportunity for choice of where they work, live, play;
- All children should be supported in a safe family unit and be provided with the opportunity for integrated education;
- Support to individuals with an intellectual disability means activities
and support systems which increase the probability and/or quality of the person's
participation in the community and its economy;
- A system to measure consumer satisfaction effectively be in place at all times;
- Individuals with an intellectual disability have the opportunity to develop sincere relationships and connections in the community.

Our approach to supporting individuals with an Intellectual Disability starts with the belief that people with intellectual disabilities have the same rights as all people and that, with assistance, people can exercise those rights. Community Living North Grenville promotes supports that respect individual differences and provide opportunities for individual development. We believe that by creating positive conditions that support individual growth, rights are more likely to be respected. As people experience more and gain a greater capacity to make decisions, the need for supervision and the potential for rights restriction is diminished. This process is called affirming and protecting individual rights.
The name "Community Living" reflects the growing understanding that
the right to live a fully integrated life within the community belongs to all.
It reflects the aspirations of persons with developmental intellectual disabilities
to be included in the fabric of community life.
Founded in 1967 by local citizens and parents
to begin our journey towards inclusion, we operate through
the governance of a local volunteer board of directors, representative
of families, individuals who are supported by Community Living
North Grenville, and the broader community. |
